Spending the day in the office with your dog is an idea that seems to be gaining ground. In France, 39% (according to the 2022 barometer for Canine Central) would like dogs better received at their workplace. A figure that even rises to 53% for dog owners.

This trend, which is widely observed in some countries, especially in the United Kingdom, is slowly taking hold in our country, driven by a change of mentality. “In Western countries, the image of the dog gradually migrates from the useful animal – used for hunting or guarding – to the pet “, Explains André Varlet, director of Canine Center.

What does the law say?

However, only 7% of French employers currently allow this practice. In some companies, dogs may be banned health or safety reasons. “It’s mostly reserved for office work,” continues André Varlet. “Moreover, employees may not dare to ask, even though this approach is no longer considered incongruent.”

With the exception of certain specific cases – healthcare institutions, public administrations and the food sector -, the law does not prohibit bringing your dog in his workplace, however, with the exception of 1st category assault dogs, as their presence is prohibited “in rooms open to the public and in public places”.

How to proceed?

Initially, the dog owner must make the request to his employer and raise the issue with the business leaders. Colleagues must of course also be consulted and express their discomfort or the like possible phobia.

If permission is given, it is advisable to write one a charter of good conduct, such as. will specify the places where dogs are prohibited, days of attendance or the duty of owners to collect their animals’ excrement. In addition, the latter must be clean, sociable and up to date with its vaccines. ONE insurance must also be considered to cover any damage.

The company may facilities in its premises : “At the Canine Center, our flooring was not suitable and we therefore replaced the carpet with a laminate floor, washable and disinfectable”.

In case of refusal, no recourse is foreseen. As André Varlet points out, “taking your dog to the office is not a right, but a tolerance”.

How do you take care of your dog?

The employee can bring toys so that his dog can take care of himself while waiting for the walk. Also, make sure you have a hard plastic basket or a transport box to let it go if you need to move. And of course, do not forget his string and his bowl.
