Docotor Strange 2: A Psychedelic Journey

Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse Of Madness‘is the continuation of the adventures of the master of the mysterious art of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This movie is listed as 28th feature film from MCU, and it is directed by none other than Sam Raimi, the director of the original Spider-Man trilogy, the franchise.evil death‘or’Dark man‘, to name just a few of these films. A very interesting choice from Marvel Studios, as Sam Raimi’s filmography mainly revolves around horror and the macabre. But what is this film so worth?

A dive into the multiverse

Some might be put off by watching this movie because they might think it’s important to have seen the series as’Wanda Vision‘,’Loki‘,’what if‘or the last 27 movies … Don’t worry, you can easily watch this movie, only … You will miss a few references or nice flashes. Of course you should at least have seen the movie ‘Doctor Strangeor having watched the latest Avengers movies to understand the characters’ development and the challenges they face. But overall, a casual viewer will not have much trouble following the story.

Slightly touched in the first film, then introduced in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home‘, this sequel throws us directly into the multiverse with the introduction of a new character: America Chavez, played by the young actress Xochitl Gomez. An important character in this film as she has the ability to generate portals to other universes.

Sam Raimi: The Master of Horror?

This film also marks Sam Raimi’s return behind the camera. The latter had not made a superhero film since the controversial ‘Spider Man 3‘. And honestly, what a pleasure to find him. What is particularly satisfying is that on screen he was able to transcribe all his love for the horror genre, but also for the superhero genre. Which then gives a rather original and sometimes even wild mix. Especially since horror is not something you see quite often, so to speak, not at all in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course, everyone has their own sensitivity to this genre, but even though this movie is classified as “All Audiences,” it would be inadvisable to go there with your kids under the age of ten, because certain scenes can be quite … confusing. Either way, this film will live up to the expectations of fans who have been hoping for a slightly more mature production since ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘ Where ‘Avengers: Endgame‘. And fans of Sam Raimi’s films will enjoy watching his own performance: with breathtaking images and very impressive special effects with a ubiquitous camera game.

A story about wizards and witches.

In this opus we find Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of Stephen Strange and Elizabeth Olsen, back in the skin of Scarlet Witch, after her Marvel series: ‘Wanda Vision‘. We have the opportunity to see a close-knit duo, each undergoing trials that are both moral and physical. Adding the character from America Chavez only increases the effort and leads our heroes down unexpected and dangerous paths. We can note a certain parallel between Wanda Maximoff and Stephen Strange, which is essential in the film; that of corrupting lust. The idea that an obsession corrupts their ideals and they will have to somehow face themselves in order to get better.

Be careful because your desires may become your downfall. »

They do not get so catastrophic mistakes.

However, this film is not without flaws. Scenes can sometimes seem too fast or others that might have needed a little more development, but everything remains very accurate and very well paced. Another point that seems a little disappointing is at the level of the soundtrack. Where composer Michael Giacchino brilliantly managed to deliver a striking theme to our wizard in the first film, Danny Elfman had a quieter, less punchy theme. Which is pretty paradoxical because he’s a composer of ‘Spider Man‘(2002) and’Spider Man 2‘(2004), which marked an entire generation with its soundtrack, which we can say is a masterpiece.

Well, we quarrel a little, but that does not stop you from feeling good, far from it.

An original, touching and remarkable film.

At the beginning of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sam Raimi was able to bring a touch of freshness to this universe in total expansion. ‘Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse Of Madness’ is a film that deals with a basic aspect of life: love. And no matter how powerful, indomitable or decisive one may be, every human being remains fallible. This is what this movie managed to show while delighting fans of comics (with breathtaking performances) and cinema.

I highly recommend that you go and see it because it is “madness”.
