Following the controversy surrounding the death of a giraffe and possible behavioral problems in animals in Amneville Zoo (Moselle), a demonstration is held in front of the park Saturday, May 28, 2022to 14.00.

Behind this call for mobilization we find Jérémy Bellet. The actor and model knows Mosel zoo well since he launched a petition against the show Tiger World in 2019.

Not anti-zoo, he wants to highlight a “dysfunction of the park”

Contacted by Lorraine Newshe explains from the beginning that he is not against this type of zoo: “I am not not anti-zoo, they participate in the conservation of species and I do not sue Amnéville Zoo. It was the first zoo to launch a holographic show, the idea is great, but what about animal welfare? “.

When the parks reopened in 2020, I returned to the Amnéville Zoo. We feel through a window the distress of the animals, it is unbearable. At that point, the animals lay worn out, the pink flamingos wading through their excrement. I’m not anti-zoo, but I’m against those places that I consider to be places of death.

However, he explains that he gave the new management a chance, but that Amnéville Zoo today continues to create “controversy every six months”: “I have never seen such an accident elsewhere. An animal does not cheat. When 50 people send us videos of the same scene on different days where the animals are worn out, there is a small problem ”.

As for the giraffe’s accidental death, Jérémy Bellet admits that there can be “mistakes, sometimes things go wrong”, but through his collection he will ” peaceful“, he wants to” put forward a giant park error and calls for greater transparency with the public about the investigations carried out.

On social networks, his call to protest more than 2,300 shares.

“It’s not because we’re filming them at some point that it’s unfortunate”

Amnéville Zoo, for its part, had responded to the allegations made by animal welfare associations, namely PAZ and Animal Code.

Near Lorraine NewsAlexis Maillot, a veterinarian at the park, had denied the allegations stereotype of los, first and foremost: “They are real concierges. At certain times, they stand in front of the bay windows. […] When we talk about stereotype, it is a movement loop where the animal goes back. That was not the case for the pilot ”.

A similar phenomenon had been noticed in a polar bear by the associations. According to Alexis Maillot, it was Henk who was filmed in “a short sequence where he did not interact with a trainer or another animal”.

Polar bears are very sensitive to their environment and need lots of constant stimulation. In that case, they can develop behaviors – which do not necessarily indicate disorder – but which on the contrary are self-stimulating behaviors.

This self-stimulation would have occurred in his old park. The vet assures that the zoo has given itself the means to respond to it, especially by creating an additional caretaker post dedicated to polar bears. “It’s not because we’re filming them at some point that it’s an accident,” he said.

An “unfortunate” death by accident

As for the death of the giraffe, Alexis Maillot had confirmed the death of the animal, which took place on the afternoon of April 20th.

“We feed the giraffes with raised baskets. [Dans ce cas présent]it looks like he got his horn stuck in the basket, he panicked and he fell, ”said the professional.

But the animal fell somewhere where its head ended lower than its body.

The vets anesthetized the animal and tried to move it “but in the maneuver the juice remained from the rumen [premier estomac des ruminants, Ndlr] came up to his head and strangled the giraffe. So she sadly died of suffocation due to the fall, as the head had found itself lower than the body “, says the vet, before specifying that” it is absolutely regrettable “.
