Entry into Morocco: likely relief in the coming days (Pr Moutawakil)

On April 8, the Ministry of Health implemented a measure temporary for access to the national territory by the sea. It consists of the possibility of presenting a vaccination passport WHERE a negative PCR test less than 72 hours old.

Currently, this measure applies only to sea entrances, pending the “adoption of a uniform health protocol for access to national territory”. It has therefore not yet been used at airports where travelers arriving in Morocco must present a vaccination passport. AND a PCR test.

Compliance with the access protocol to the national territory is still awaited by tourist operators, but also by tourists and Moroccans living abroad (MRE) who wish to travel to Morocco without having to fulfill this dual condition.

Contacted by Médias24 recommends experts and members of the Scientific and Technical Commissions (against Covid-19 and vaccination) to speed up the easing of conditions for entry into Morocco by harmonizing the measures taken.

“We will most likely get relief in the next few days”

Professor Saïd Moutaouakil, a member of the Scientific and Technical Committee against Covid-19, recalls that “the resumption of maritime traffic is intended to give a commercial boost. There has therefore been an acceleration of the process to allow more fluid exchanges nature, especially since “the health situation is much more reassuring”.

Professor Moutaouakil believes that Morocco will “very likely to experience relief in the coming days”. He said he was in favor of extending the relief introduced for maritime passengers to “harmonize it with the airways”. A relaxation which, according to him, should be general and not just apply to countries classified in the Green Zone. And this as long as there is no dangerous variant in circulation.

The Omicron ‘XE’ sub-variant provides food for thought for decision makers. But we will most likely, and in the coming days, harmonize things, says Professor Moutaouakil.

Vaccination passport or PCR test: not both at the same time

Dr. Saïd Afif, Member of the Scientific and Technical Committee for Vaccination, presented by Médias24, considers it necessary toaccelerate the harmonization of health conditions for all travelers, regardless of the place of entry.

“From a purely scientific point of view, the difference between the health protocol for access at sea and the one that applies to airports makes no sense. We are always in favor of respecting the health aspect. Our situation (in Morocco, editor’s note), such other countries classified in the green zoneallows the same measures to be adopted, namely the presentation of a negative PCR test for persons who do not have a vaccination passport and the presentation of vaccination passports for those who do not both at the same time “he continues.

“You need to think about the short term, especially on the occasion of Eid, which will encourage MREs to return to Morocco. Some large families, even if vaccinated, will be forced to pay large sums for PCR tests. You must think about facilitate their travels. If there is news on the health front, the authorities will adapt, ”adds Dr. Afif.

Same story with Professor Jaâfar Heikel, epidemiologist, infectious disease specialist and health economist. “If the health situation changes in the coming months, public policies will adapt.” But for now, he reassures, “Moroccan epidemiological data (frequency, severity, hospitalization, resuscitation, etc.) are green.”

“These indicators have never been better than in March 2020. They are even excellent. In addition, 80% of the population received a primary vaccination, 17% received the 3rd dose, and 1.2 million people became infected. We have a fairly comfortable and sufficiently protective herd immunity, ”says Professor Heikel.

The latter concludes: “We must always be careful and vigilant in ensuring epidemiological surveillance. But this does not require excessive restrictive measures; proportionality must be ensured. Many people do not risk coming to Morocco due to the high cost of PCR tests in Europe, for example, or the restriction of doing so 48 hours before departure. These people therefore risk changing the destination of their vacation. However, given the current state of health, it is not necessary to require both the negative PCR test and the vaccination card to get to Morocco. A relaxation in this direction is justified on the health level, but also on the economic and psychological level, the latter concerns first and foremost the citizens. »
