Disney +: “Obi-Wan Kenobi” returns with nostalgia for the beginning of “Star Wars”

A refugee on the planet Tatooine, from where he sees the young Luke Skywalker from afar, Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi is a broken man living alone in the desert, forced to work in an open-air slaughterhouse. He was unable to prevent his protege, Anakin Skywalker, who he believes is dead after fighting him on the planet Mustafar, from switching to the dark side of the force. The threat from the Sith, these ex-knights passed in the bad camp, however, always remains present, especially because of the Inquisitors, who track down the last Jedi still alive. However, Obi-Wan is forced to reactivate his lightsaber and powers, as Leia, Luke’s sister, entrusted to an adoptive family, is in danger …

Of all the series offered so far in the “Star Wars” universe, “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, the first two parts of which were unveiled on Friday, May 27 at Disney +, is undoubtedly the one that demands the most nostalgic side of the fans. So think! The fiction, which was originally supposed to be the movie after episode IX, “The Ascension of Skywalker” (released in 2019), brings back to the screen one of the saga’s most emblematic characters, always played by Ewan McGregor in his young version. Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) is there too. Not to mention Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, 10 years old in this story, as the events take place a decade after “Revenge of the Sith”. Excerpts from this film also serve as an introduction to the first episode, which also benefits, like the following, from a musical theme by John Williams, the official composer of the saga in the cinema.

A devilishly effective third sister

A long start: 55 minutes, though including 4 minutes with old photos and an endless credit. But also a little slow. Director Deborah Chow, who cut her teeth into two parts of “The Mandalorian”, takes advantage of 6 episodes, takes the time to tell her story, showing the exhaustion of Obi-Wan, defeatist and tired of the fights, precisely interpreted by a very motivated Ewan McGregor. “For ten years, Obi-Wan has been hiding, the comedian recently explained during an international press conference. He can not communicate with any of his former comrades and leads a rather lonely life. He is unable to use the Force. So somehow he lost faith. »

The Jedi will have to fight against newcomers, the Inquisitors. They had appeared in the animated series “Star Wars Rebels” in 2014. The plot highlights in particular one, Third Sister, played by the actress Moses Ingram, seen in the movie “Ambulance” or the series “The Game of the Lady”. A protagonist who quickly stands out, driven by his ambition and his lack of scruples, which we feel will give the hero a hard time and if every performance is a treat. Also note the presence among the villains, in a minor role, by Flea, bassist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers! Finally, another good idea, rather than focusing (at least in the beginning) on Luke Skywalker, is focusing on Leia Organa, the future princess, a very resourceful and fearless little girl.

The story moves in the second episode, completely nightly, from Tatooine to the planet whose design evokes Asian metropolises like Tokyo or Hong Kong. When the effort is known, the rhythm accelerates a bit. Obi-Wan begins to regain some of his brilliance, battles and special effects, impeccably, multiplying eventually. We can only hope that the arrival of Darth Vader, seen during a final sequence, will further enhance the whole, to become more memorable than “The Book of Boba Fett”, considered a semi-success, and reach the level of the first season of “The Mandalorian” …
