No more dogs or cats for sale in pet stores: why this is good news

Fighting animal cruelty, here’s the goal that the state of New York has launched by finally banning the sale of animals in stores. A popular measure that is already in place in several US states and is about to enter into force in France.

Animal welfare first

The goal of this initiative? Avoid these stores coming from “animal factories”, known for their deplorable living conditions and their (very) high rate of reproduction. But New York is not a pioneer in this area. Of many other US states have already implemented this initiative, along with California, Maine, Maryland, Illinois and Washington State. One of the most restrictive laws is in Cambridge, where shops are simply forbidden to sell reptiles, birds, hamsters or even gerbils.

US authorities now encourage pet stores to partner with shelters or associations rescue of animals. They also recommendcreate an information space for customers want to adopt a pet, because if their sale in pet stores is now banned, it’s still back possible to buy a four-legged friend through the owners directly.

The American Kennel Club, the largest dog association in the United States, has spoken out against this new announcement and condemns its “anti-breeder” character and its restrictive consequences for consumers.

And in France?

In 2021, as part of the bill against animal cruelty – which excludes sensitive issues such as breeding or hunting – the National Assembly voted in favor ofban on the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores. The text is due to enter into force on 1 January 2024. Following the same principle as “Lucy’s Law”, named after the dog that was locked up inside a puppy farm in Wales for years, the text is however, does not apply to new pets (NAC), such as hamsters and rabbits.
