“Israel will always be for Morocco on the issue of the Sahara”

– Since the resumption of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel, communications on partnerships have multiplied. What are the options for each of the two countries?

– The two countries have similar diplomatic interests. Israel has a strong relationship with the United States, and this is also the case for Rabat, who has a historically excellent diplomatic relationship with Washington, this should pressure the two countries to work together to strengthen these ties and to ensure that the prospects for the two States are in line.

– Energy sovereignty is a priority for the Moroccan government. What are the prospects for cooperation between Rabat and Tel Aviv on this issue?

– Israel has been working since 2009 on the development and exploitation of gas located in the eastern Mediterranean. Currently, we have discovered large deposits of gas in our territorial waters, which is of particular interest to Europe, which has been looking for the alternative since the outbreak of war in Ukraine.

In addition, this opportunity also opens up in Morocco, as the African continent is rich in natural gas, especially after Nigeria’s large reserves. If this natural resource is transported north through the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, it can represent a reliable alternative to the old continent, which today more than ever needs to diversify its gas suppliers.

– The therapeutic use of cannabis is also an area of expertise for Israel. Morocco has just legalized the medicinal use of this plant. Is this sector of interest to Israeli investors?

– Israel is researching the pharmaceutical uses of cannabis and it is certain that this experience will be shared with Morocco. Israel has demonstrated its expertise in medical research, including experimenting with this plant as a source of several medicinal benefits. If the Moroccan state considers cooperating with Israel in this regard, it will find us on its side.

– Security cooperation is also an important point of cooperation between the two countries. What are the problems?

– Unfortunately, relations between Iran and Algeria are dangerous and could affect the interests of both the Moroccan state and Israel. I believe that both countries have an interest in seeing Iranian expansion stopped to ensure stability in the region.

– The development of all the points we have mentioned requires that the two countries remain on the same wavelength at several levels. Do you not think that the conflict between Israel and Palestine could create problems between the two countries?

– I believe that the Moroccan state realizes that Israel has made significant efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. During Obama’s last term, Mahmoud Abbas visited the White House as the Americans developed a peace plan.

President Obama had asked the Palestinian president if he accepted the project proposed by the United States, the response from the Palestinian leader, as reported by the Washington Post, was “I want to get back to you” because she was not in line. with the expectations of the Palestinians. On the other hand, Tel Aviv had accepted. Today, the Moroccan-Israeli relationship can be a lever to strengthen the dialogue between the two parties.

– With regard to the Moroccan Sahara, Israel’s position is not in line with the expectations of Moroccans, who would like to see Tel Aviv do the same as the United States. How do you explain this hesitation?

– Honestly, I have no idea! Israeli Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked said during his visit to Morocco last week that Israel supports Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. Israel has an interest in Morocco winning this file, moreover, the Polisario has supported the Iranian vision, making it obvious that the Israeli election will never be on its side.
