When the US leads

Between Morocco and the United States, relations are centuries old and the partnership is strategic. Shared values and interests and the same commitment to serving peace, security and prosperity drive the two allies. It is this forward-looking vision that has favored the historic recognition in 2020 by this international power and influential member of the UN Security Council, of Morocco’s full and complete sovereignty over its entire territory. , including its southern provinces. A turning point that shows the way.

With this major decision, which only translates Washington’s continued support for a compromise solution based on the Moroccan autonomy plan, the United States confirms that the final solution to this artificial conflict is within reach. It goes through the credible political solution that the Kingdom put on the table in 2007.

Like the position of the vast majority of the international community, this unwavering support means that the solution can only be political, based solely on the Moroccan autonomy initiative, within the framework of sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the Kingdom.

Thanks to an active and active diplomacy under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, other influential countries are following the American example again by giving firm support to the solution proposed by Morocco.

Spain, Germany, Romania, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Serbia and Hungary, to mention only the latter, have announced their support for the Moroccan plan, as the only serious and credible solution. They thus join the majority of Arab and African states that strongly support and have always supported the plan of autonomy under Morocco’s sovereignty.

Indeed, for the United States, regardless of the administration at the helm of the White House, Democrat or Republican, consistency is the salient feature of the position on the Sahara issue.

Through the voice of the highest officials from the various branches of government, the Biden administration has not failed this tradition by affirming that the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco is “serious, credible and realistic”.

“The United States continues to consider the autonomy plan presented by Morocco as serious, credible and realistic” and as an approach to meet the aspirations of the people of the region, the US State Department noted, each time his latest reactions to this. fabric.
In a statement issued on the occasion of the visit last March to Morocco by the head of US diplomacy, Antony Blinken, Washington also expressed its support for the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, in carrying out the political process on the issue of the Sahara in UN auspices.

The same position was confirmed in the joint statement that sanctioned the strategic dialogue between Morocco and the United States, chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and the US Deputy Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman.

Unlike Algeria, which created the separatist group “Polisario”, armed and financed it to maintain instability in the region by opposing any political outcome, Morocco continues to reiterate its commitment to the political process. The latest resolution, Resolution 2602, calls for a “realistic, pragmatic, lasting and compromise-based” political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
By renewing the aid that applies to the Moroccan Sahara, the US Congress is also consecrating the autonomy plan’s primacy.

The report that accompanies the US budget law, which was signed into law this year by President Joe Biden, after its adoption by Congress, as a legislative power that unites the House of Representatives and the Senate, renews the grant of US aid to the Moroccan. Sahara.

The report accompanying this law also clearly confirms Washington’s position in support of the process carried out under the auspices of the United Nations in favor of a political compromise solution to this regional dispute maintained by the Algerian regime.

In Washington, there is clear support for the necessity to comply with the parameters of the Security Council resolutions, which establish the prominence of the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a credible, serious and realistic solution to this artificial conflict.
